Important β€” Before You Register for a Specialty Course

For all Virginia specialty exam prep courses (HIC, RBC, CIC, and H/H), you MUST already have received pre-approval from DPOR and have your PSI exam scheduled within a few days of the class. This ensures you sit for the exam while the material is fresh. The Mandatory 8-Hour Pre-License course and the business/law (Class A/B) exam prep course do not require prior approval β€” though we still encourage you to schedule your business/law (Class A/B) exam 3–5 days after class.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to complete the licensing steps in a specific order?
No. Steps 1–4 (choosing your class and specialty, completing the pre-license course, passing the Business/Law exam if required, and establishing your business entity) can be done in any order. However, all of them must be completed before submitting your application to DPOR.
Do I need approval before taking the Business/Law exam?
No. The Business/Law exam (required for Class A and B) can be taken at any time without DPOR approval. However, if you submit your application before passing it, DPOR will hold your application and not process it until you pass.
Do I need approval before taking my specialty exam?
Yes. Unlike the Business/Law exam, the specialty exam requires DPOR approval first. You receive that approval after submitting a complete application (with the Business/Law exam passed, if required for your class).
Can I use experience from another state or country?
Yes. DPOR accepts out-of-state and international experience as long as it is clearly described, relevant to your specialty, and properly verified by a qualified individual who has direct knowledge of your work.
Can I add a specialty to my existing Virginia license?
Yes. You do not need a new license. You apply to add the specialty to your existing license, receive DPOR approval, and then pass the specialty exam. Many contractors hold multiple specialties on one license.
Does a felony or misdemeanor prevent me from getting licensed?
Not automatically. DPOR reviews each application individually. Factors include the nature and timing of the offense, its relevance to contracting work, and evidence of stability. Honest disclosure is critical β€” failure to disclose is often treated more seriously than the offense itself.
