Understanding the Exam
Contractor Business Exam
Taken by: Designated Employee (DE)
Tests knowledge of running a contractor business and Virginia-specific regulations.
Contractor Specialty Exam
Taken by: Qualified Individual (QI)
Tests specialized knowledge of the contractor specialty (HIC, RBC, CIC, H/H, etc.).
After You Pass the Exam
Check Your Application Status
Once you've passed the exam, you can check on your license application status with the Virginia DPOR Board office:

Note: Allow time for your test results to reach DPOR before inquiring about application status. Processing times vary.
Important Information
- Pre-approval from DPOR is required to sit for specialty exams (as of March 1, 2016)
- Schedule your specialty exam only after receiving your approval letter from DPOR
- The approval process can take several months - plan accordingly
- PSI schedules exams daily at various locations throughout Virginia and nearby states
